Tips

A never ending list of photography tips.

If you have any tips you would like to share, feel free to leave a comment and I will publish them as an addition to this page.

1. Where there is light, there is a photo waiting to be taken.
2. Take a photo a day. It will get you thinking.
3. Never give up.
4. Don’t “come back” to a photo. Light conditions change fast and often they are never the same again.
5. Remember, it’s not the camera that makes a great shot, it’s the person behind it.
6. Be creative!
7. Remember to take the lens cap off before you try to take a shot.
8. It’s quality not quantity that counts. Especially with photos.
9. Don’t be afraid to take the shot.
10. Hold your camera correctly. It makes a big difference.
11. Try to get your camera as steady and stable as possible before taking a shot to prevent camera shake.
12. The rule of thirds is your friend.
13. Shoot in RAW whenever possible.
14. You would be surprised how much a tripod helps improve your shot. Take one with you.
15. Get in different positions to get a better perspective. Get closer to the ground, get on a ladder, whatever is needed to get that shot.
16. Keep your equipment clean and in good shape.
17. Try to use one different feature on your camera everyday.
18. Don’t listen to what other people say, if you like, then you like it.
19. If the photo is not coming out like you thought it would, check your settings: shutter speed, aperture, ISO, white balance to name a few.
20. Slow shutter speeds can result in some nice shots.
21. It’s OK to break the rules. It’s just better if you do it knowingly.
22. Get familiar with your camera. The better you know it’s abilities, the more you will be able to do with it.
23. Get enough light.
24. For a portrait shot don’t use backlighting as your main light. It will result in a silhouette, which is fine if that is what you are trying to achieve but for the normal portrait you don’t want that.
25. If you have an idea, try it out!
26. Take time to get the perfect shot.
27. Don’t be a “Photoshop photographer”. It is fine to post-process your photos but you don’t want to take a photo with the idea in mind, “Oh, I’ll just Photoshop it out.” Take the time to make it good. If you wouldn’t hang the photo up in your house “as is” take the time to make it right before you click the shutter.
28. A lens hood can be an amazing tool.
29. Take your camera with you everywhere. You don’t want to have those, “I wish I had my camera,” moments.
30. Try not to have a busy background.
31. Find an interesting angle.
32.
